Wilton Manors Florida MapWilton Manors is a city in Broward County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 11,632. Wilton Manors is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, which was home to 5,564,635 people at the 2010 census. Although the city is very small geographically, portions of Wilton Manors FL are located in two separate U. S. congressional districts. A sign in front of Wilton Manors City Hall reads: “Unlicensed contracting is a felony in Florida.” Signs such as these were in direct response to the proliferation of unlicensed contractors following Hurricane Wilma’s destruction. Wilton Manors, the “Island City”, was incorporated in 1947. It is bordered on the north by the North Fork of the Middle River and the city of Oakland Park; to the south, the boundaries include the South Fork of the Middle River and the city of Fort Lauderdale; the eastern terminus of the city limits extend to near Federal Highway (US 1); and the westernmost boundary reaches Interstate 95. Wilton Manors is home to several recreational facilities, including Colohatchee Nature Park, a 9.3 acres (38,000 m2) recreational facility complete with a boardwalk for nature observation, a dog park, and a boat ramp for watercraft entry. In 2010 Wilton Manors Main Street (now Wilton Manors Development alliance) aided Brazos Films in the production of episode seven of their award winning series “One Square Mile”.

Hurricane Wilma was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. Wilma was the fourth Category 5 hurricane and second-most destructive hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 season. Formed in the Caribbean Sea near Jamaica on October 15. Wilma continued intensifying, and eventually became a hurricane on October 18. Shortly thereafter, extreme intensification occurred, and in only 24 hours, Wilma became a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 185 mph (295 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made landfall in Cape Romano, Florida with winds of 120 mph (190 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made several landfalls, with the most destructive effects felt in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, Cuba, and the US state of Florida. At least 62 deaths were reported, and damage is estimated at $29.1 billion (2005 USD), $20.6 billion (2005 USD) of which occurred in the United States. As a result, Hurricane Wilma is ranked among the top five most costly hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic and the fifth costliest storm in United States history.
