Tamarac FL

Tamarac Florida MapTamarac is a city in Broward County, Florida. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 60,427. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, which was home to 5,564,635 people according to the 2010 census. In the early 1960s a young developer named Ken Behring came from the Midwest and bought land where he could, creating an active adult community of two-bedroom maintenance-free homes. He called his new city Tamarac, named after the first business owned by Behring, a chain of car washes called Car-A-Mat. Tamarac is Car-A-Mat backwards. In 1963, Behring built the city’s first development east of State Road 7, Tamarac Lakes Section One and Section Two. Next came two neighborhoods of homes built on a former orange grove called Tamarac Lakes North and The Boulevards. Three of Behring’s last developments were Tamarac Lakes South, then the Mainlands of Tamarac Lakes just west of State Road 7, and finally, the Woodlands community. The city’s early leaders, hoping to preserve Tamarac as a bedroom community, allowed Fort Lauderdale to annex commercial land. In the late 1970s, the city de-annexed a long line of commercial buildings from State Road 7 all the way to Northwest 31 Avenue, but it went along with Behring’s vision of Tamarac as a bedroom community. Behring also named a subdivision he founded in the Pinellas Park area, the “Mainlands of Tamarac By-the-Gulf”. Coral Springs FL is to the north. Margate FL is to the east. Sunrise FL is to the south.

Hurricane Wilma

Hurricane Wilma in Florida

Hurricane Wilma was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. Wilma was the fourth Category 5 hurricane and second-most destructive hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 season. Formed in the Caribbean Sea near Jamaica on October 15. Wilma continued intensifying, and eventually became a hurricane on October 18. Shortly thereafter, extreme intensification occurred, and in only 24 hours, Wilma became a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 185 mph (295 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made landfall in Cape Romano, Florida with winds of 120 mph (190 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made several landfalls, with the most destructive effects felt in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, Cuba, and the US state of Florida. At least 62 deaths were reported, and damage is estimated at $29.1 billion (2005 USD), $20.6 billion (2005 USD) of which occurred in the United States. As a result, Hurricane Wilma is ranked among the top five most costly hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic and the fifth costliest storm in United States history.
