Pompano Beach FL

Pompano Beach Florida MapPompano Beach FL is a city in Broward County, Florida, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The nearby Hillsboro Inlet forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. As of 2012, the city’s population was 102,984. It is part of the Miami Metropolitan Area, which was home to 5,564,635 people at the 2010 US Census. Pompano Beach is currently in the middle of a redevelopment process to revitalize its beachfront and historic downtown. The city has also been listed as one of the top real estate markets, being featured in CNN, Money and the Wall Street Journal as one of the country’s top vacation home markets. Pompano Beach Airpark, located within the city, is the home of the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of Innovation. Its name is derived from the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), a fish found off the Atlantic coast. There had been scattered settlers in the area from at least the mid-1880s, but the first documented permanent residents of the Pompano area were George Butler and Frank Sheene and their families, who arrived in 1896 as railway employees. The first train arrived in the small Pompano settlement on February 22, 1896. It is said that Sheene gave the community its name after jotting down on his survey of the area the name of the fish he had for dinner. The coming of the railroad led to development farther west from the coast. In 1906 Pompano became the southernmost settlement in newly-created Palm Beach County. That year, the Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed on the beach. On July 3, 1908, a new municipality was incorporated in what was then Dade County: the Town of Pompano. In 1915, Broward County was established, with a northern boundary at the Hillsboro Canal. Thus, within eight years, Pompano had been in three counties. Pompano Beach experienced significant growth during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. Following the population boom due to World War II, the City of Pompano merged with the newly-formed municipality on the beach and became the City of Pompano Beach in 1947. Like most of southeast Florida, Pompano Beach experienced great growth in the late 20th century as many people moved there from northern parts of the United States. A substantial seasonal population also spends its winters in the area. Deerfield Beach FL is to the north. Margate FL is to the east. Oakland Park FL is to the south.

Hurricane Wilma

Hurricane Wilma in Florida

Hurricane Wilma was the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. Wilma was the fourth Category 5 hurricane and second-most destructive hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 season. Formed in the Caribbean Sea near Jamaica on October 15. Wilma continued intensifying, and eventually became a hurricane on October 18. Shortly thereafter, extreme intensification occurred, and in only 24 hours, Wilma became a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 185 mph (295 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made landfall in Cape Romano, Florida with winds of 120 mph (190 km/h). Hurricane Wilma made several landfalls, with the most destructive effects felt in the Yucat√°n Peninsula of Mexico, Cuba, and the US state of Florida. At least 62 deaths were reported, and damage is estimated at $29.1 billion (2005 USD), $20.6 billion (2005 USD) of which occurred in the United States. As a result, Hurricane Wilma is ranked among the top five most costly hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic and the fifth costliest storm in United States history.
